Gantry cranes refer to cranes that are built atop a gantry. A gantry is a structure that is used to straddle an object or workspace. Gantry cranes are widely used in marine applications to load and unload large containers into or from cargo ships in a shipping port. In rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes, the entire structure of the crane is usually placed on rails. In this type of gantry crane, the overhead supporting structure is fixed similar to the ceiling of a building. This fixed structure is attached to a movable beam-mounted hoist that runs overhead along a rail.
