Paul Sorbara, President, Golden Goliath Resources Ltd
Golden Goliath Resources Ltd. (TSX.V:GNG) is a junior exploration company that controls an entire old mining camp, or district, that covers an area of 15 by 25 kilometres. The area includes numerous past producing gold and silver mines dating back to the time of the Spaniards.
Golden Goliath, focused on exploring and developing the gold and silver potential in the world famous Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains of northwestern Mexico, owns a property package in Chihuahua State in northern Mexico. The property is 8 miles from a new gold discovery by Fresnillo PLC, the world’s largest silver company. Fresnillo’s resource reserve estimate is from 3 to 10 million ounces of gold.
Paul Sorbara, President, Golden Goliath Resources Ltd., says that the geology of Fresnillo’s property is very much like Golden Goliath’s property, which is also larger.
“Agnico-Eagle Mines, based in Toronto, has now done a joint venture on one of our claims,” adds Mr. Sorbara.
Mr. Sorbara points out, “it’s a great position for us to be in, because basically all the ground in the area surrounding us is taken. Fresnllo, Agnico and Penoles is the other land holder are all serious players looking for mines and we believe they know we have the goods.”
Golden Goliath really focused on the Los Bolas property for several years and did a resource calculation that was very favourable with an average grade of about 434 grams of silver on one side of the property and in addition to that a large volcanic target of lower grade.
“On the property that we’re starting to work on, Nopalera, which is right next door to Las Bolas, there’s not enough data to do a resource calculation yet, but we hope to do one as soon as possible,” says Mr. Sorbara. “We do believe that the potential there is as great or greater than what they Fresnilla has with Orisyvo.”
“We’re very excited about it and the major companies that have come down to the property are very excited about it.”
Mr. Sorbara’s background is as a geologist with a Masters degree from the University of Toronto, studying collapsed caldera structures in Canada's Northwest Territories. Following graduation, he conducted Caldera Reconnaissance Programs for Cominco Ltd. in both British Columbia and the Sierra Madre Occidental range in Northern Mexico.
When Mr. Sorbara first started in Mexico, the law was that a foreign company could only own 49% of a property. In 1992, they changed the laws to 100%. The same week the laws changed, he founded a private Mexican company, which after 8 years he took public as Golden Goliath Resources Ltd.
“I’m a very determined, long term guy,” says Mr. Sorbara. “I put in 8 years of my own time and money with no pay to make Golden Goliath work.”
His efforts paid off. Golden Goliath now has a number of large properties and a strong board of directors, all with extensive mining experience.
The directors include: Mr. Sorbara’s Mexican partner, Daniel Nofrietta, a geologist; Dr. Andrew Macgregor Robertson, a geologist and very well known international consultant; Richard Hughes, one of the discoverers of the Hemlo Gold Mines in Ontario and the Balmoral Mine in Quebec; and, Mr. Sorbara says, “most importantly,” Mark Legault, Vice President, Project Development, Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd.
“Agnico-Eagle’s Pinos Altos property is 50 km from our camp,” points out Mr. Sorbara. “It’s going into production soon and we could be a future supplier to them.”
Even though Golden Goliath is a junior exploration company, they have a giant name and close ties to giants in the mining industry.
