The confirmation that junior Western Potash does indeed own rights within Rio Tinto’s
potash project in southern Saskatchewan will no doubt impact the mining giant’s plan to
progress the deposit, which it previously categorised as a Tier 1 development.
Mineral exploration company Western Potash Corp. has said that it owns potash mineral
rights within Rio Tinto’s recently ‘uncovered’ potash deposit in southern Saskatchewan,
Canada.
Responding to recent media reports speculating on Rio Tinto’s development of the project,
the junior company said it has leased freehold potash mineral rights in the potash deposit
where Rio Tinto’s KP 405 exploration permit is located, near to Western’s Milestone
property.
Western Potash said that it holds 100% of 20,523 ha (205km2) of land within Rio Tinto’s KP
405, and additionally owns less than a 100% interest on 49 parcels of land totalling 3,588 ha
(36km2).
The company clarified that it controls a total of 24,111 ha (241km2) within Rio Tinto’s
exploration area, and released a map demonstrating its ownership within the project.
“These leases are valid for ten years, from the execution date, with an option to extend for an
additional ten year term,” the company said.
