Cambridge House International: Looking Forward to the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference

on 12/12/2013

Resource investment conferences provide a great place for investors to meet with industry experts and resource companies. And one of the must-attend conferences each year is the Cambridge House International Vancouver Resource Investment Conference.

In 2014, it takes place from January 19 to January 20 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

In anticipation of this event, we spoke with Jeremy Martin of Cambridge House International. Mr. Martin shared with us why he’s excited about this upcoming conference and why investors should plan to attend.

“It’s the largest of the 6 conferences we produce annually,” Mr. Martin reported. Along with this conference, the company hosts several other resource conferences including events in Toronto, Calgary, Palm Springs, and Spokane. And they’re branching out from resource events to cover a different industry: “We are going to be putting on a technology-based conference on January 16th in Toronto. This will be Canada’s first investor-focused tech conference. We’re really looking forward to watching the Canadian tech space grow. It’s young but there a lot of great ideas out there and a lot of great companies.” In many ways, the Canadian tech industry is a lot like the junior resource industry so investors who want a similar investing experience but want to branch out from resources should consider attending this event in Toronto.

Of the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference, Mr. Martin said: “It’s right in the backyard of the junior mining sector so it attracts a very large crowd – we’re expecting about 10,000 people. It’s becoming an industry staple… It’s a great show,”

So, why should investors attend this show? Mr. Martin thinks there are many reasons: “The show has a number of things going on,” he said. And then he listed some of those reasons:

They have many speakers that will attract investors: “We have Peter Schiff, Frank Holmes, Mike Maloney, and about 40 other speakers as well.” Although he didn’t have time to list them all in our interview, readers will recognize many other names of speakers who are scheduled at the conference, including Brent Cook, Leonard Melman, Jim Letourneau, Rick Rule, and many others.

The event will, of course, also have many exhibitors: “We’ll do just over 300 public companies. It’s down a little bit but it’s a sign of where the market stands right now.”

And all of this (and more) happens in several different formats that “really create an atmosphere of a well-rounded event,” said Mr. Martin. “There will be 5 workshop rooms, 2 pavilions, and 2 main speaking halls. Sprott Asset Management will be hosting one of the pavilions and we’ll do some technical sessions in there. There’s just a lot going on from top to bottom: Lots of presentations, lots of opportunities to meet with companies, and a number of great speakers to give you some insight.”

As well, Cambridge House produces video from their conferences and that adds some additional value for conference attendees and for those who cannot attend. Mr. Martin said: “We will be live-streaming one of the speaker halls so if you’re not able to get down to the shows, we’ll have the links to the videos on the website, and we’ll be shooting a number of interviews with the speakers. It’s a great way to get a quick, 10 minute update from analysts, newsletter writers, fund managers, and different industry experts, so those interviews are all free to view on YouTube at http://YouTube.come/CambridgeHouseINTL. It’s a way to take something home after the conference and enjoy it after. There’s a lot going on and you can’t make it to all 130 of the workshops so the video library is a convenient way for people after the fact to revisit some of the speaker and topics.”

Next, we asked Mr. Martin about his assessment of the markets: “We’re almost 3 years into this bear since March 2011 but I think we’ve been trending sideways nicely since July. I think the junior market saw a bottom in mid-July. We touched about $860 on the venture exchange and now we’re floating in the mid-$900’s. I think the difficulty is really finding what’s going to move the market back up. There’s no identifiable catalyst or indicator that shows there’s some strength coming back into the market. I think that’s the worrisome part. The resource sector is probably going to be slightly dormant and down for a couple of years before we really start seeing any major movement upwards.”

But, as Mr. Martin suggest, that is the value of an event like the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference: “You get a very honest look into a company and people – and people are one of the most important parts of these companies. You want to make sure you’re putting your money with someone who is responsible, has a proven track record, and is going to use your money wisely and make good decisions. It’s the same as whether you’d rather go to a game or watch the game at home. Being at these shows is a direct line to meet with these companies face to face. Listen to the speakers, talk to the companies, network and create ideas – those are really fostered at these types of shows.”

And lastly, Mr. Martin shared his insight on what opportunities he sees in the resource sector. “On the resource side of things, the companies that really interest me are the specialty metals: The rare earth metals, the tungstens – the companies looking for metals and minerals that are hard to find and necessary to improve technology. Those are interesting to me a little bit more than the gold and silver and copper iron stocks. We’re starting to see more and more recycling coming available for those metals. So the rare earth metals are where I think there’s a huge need and great opportunity.”

With his connection to these events, Mr. Martin has a unique view of the industry and how investors ebb and flow when markets are good and bad. And investors who want to really connect with experts and companies in the resource industry should plan to attend the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference.
