From the Mantle to the Bank

As a general rule, the most successful man in life is the man who has the best information

North American Nickel (NAN), a resource exploration and development company, recently initiated a three-day lecture series in Greenland and Denmark. The objective of the lectures was to educate the next generation of Greenlandic and Danish students to the mining industry by raising their awareness of professional opportunities in the technical, administrative and financial sectors, and to provide a description of the geological setting and exploration approaches to nickel sulphide mineralization.

The featured speaker was Dr. Tony Naldrett, the world’s foremost authority on nickel-copper-platinum group metal sulphide deposits. Prior to coming to Canada, Tony obtained his degree in geology from the University of Cambridge in 1957. After working as a geologist for several years, he left full-time employment to conduct research on nickel deposits, receiving his M.Sc. (1961), Ph.D. (1964) and D.Sc. (2000 and 2001). In 1967 he commenced his employment as an Assistant Professor of Geology at the University of Toronto where he worked until 1998; he is now an Emeritus Professor.

Tony has authored and co-authored 240 refereed publications (including the writing or editing of eight books) and his research has covered most of the world's magmatic sulfide ores, including those at Sudbury, Raglan, Voisey’s Bay, Norilsk, Pechenga, Bushveld and Stillwater Complexes, the Duluth Complex, the West Australian Komatiite deposits and the Zimbabwe Ni deposits. Tony’s expertise is truly global in nature.

He has consulted for major and junior mining companies worldwide and has been active in many scientific societies. His efforts have earned him numerous honors including the Duncan Derry Medal in 1980, the Logan Medal in 1994 and the Penrose Gold Medal in 2002.

Other headline speakers included: John Pattison, NAN’s Chief Geologist; Mark Fedikow, President of NAN; John Ferguson, NAN; Henrik Stendal, BMP;

Adam Garde, GEUS; Thomas Kokfelt, GEUS; Joshua Hughes, NUNA Minerals; and Henrik Sabra, Avannaa Resources.

Dr. Tony Naldrett and Mr. John Pattison presented lectures on the 18th and 19th of September to students at the Arctic Institute in Sisimiut. The team then traveled to Copenhagen and joined the rest of the speakers at the GeoCenter Denmark, University of Copenhagen to present lectures to students, geologists and other interested parties on the 20th of September.

The topics discussed included:

* The life of a nickel sulfide deposit, base and precious metal exploration and the exploration and mining outlook in Greenland

* The endogenic versus exogenic origin of some crypto explosion structures and their bearing on nickel mineralization, meteorite impacts and nickel mineralization

* Nickel potential in Greenland, NAN’s Maniitsoq Nickel-Copper-Cobalt-Platinum Group Metal Exploration Program

* Critical metal exploration in Greenland (included case studies from Nuna Minerals' exploration activities)

Conclusion

Barclays expects base metals to outperform oil and precious metals and advocates a bullish position in nickel. Because of production cuts and acceleration in demand across the board in base metals (doubling from 4% first quarter 2013 to the current 8%) Barclays believes the structural surplus in nickel is set to dramatically shrink in 2014.

"For the first time in a several years, price risk could return consistently to the upside in base metals and start to be more appropriate for buying the dips rather than selling the rallies, as has been the case for most of 2013." Barclays

After watching the above linked videos I’m sure you’ll agree 2014 is going to be an exciting year for North American Nickel. Is NAN on your radar screen?

If not, it should be.
